Synopsis: When Jacob Jankowski, recently orphaned and suddenly adrift, jumps onto a passing train, he enters a world of freaks, grifters, and misfits, a second-rate circus struggling to survive during the Great Depression, making one-night stands in town after endless town. A veterinary student who almost earned his degree, Jacob is put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It is there that he meets Marlena, the beautiful young star of the equestrian act, who is married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. He also meets Rosie, an elephant who seems untrainable until he discovers a way to reach her.

What the press would say:

The Oscar winning team behind Driving Miss Daisy is back with Water for Elephants, a gorgeous picture about Depression Era life in the circus. Hayden Christensen leads this tight ensemble with a engaging charismatic performance as Jacob. He demonstrates real growth as an actor and displays a range of depth. Brian Cox turns in another over the top performance, this time as Ring Mater "Uncle Al". Penelope Cruz plays Marlena the circus' biggest attraction. She is the star of the equestrian act and enters a love triangle with Jacob, while being married to the cruel August, who is brilliantly played by James Marsden. James Marsden has never been better. He gives the best performance of his career as a suspicious husband. With the intelligent direction of Bruce Beresford, and a cunning adaptation by Oscar Winners Ted Tally (The Silence of the Lambs) and Alfred Uhry (Driving Miss Daisy) they bring to life this incredible story. This has the chance to sweep the Oscar's in March. Look for nominations in the following categories.
